In 1984, we reported four Mayo Clinic patients with Cushing syndrome and an unusual
bilateral adrenal disorder to which we gave the descriptive title “primary pigmented nodular
adrenocortical disease”(31). A search of the literature had revealed 24 similar cases; in 3 of
these, the disorder was familial. In one family, initially reported in 1980 by Schweizer-
